2/13/01 Berkeley, CA
Massachusetts native KK Gregory qualified for
the World Junior Championships in Austria by placing fourth in the 18-19
year old age group at the JCCA Continental Championship at Ironworks in Berkeley,
California on February 3, 2001. KK qualified for the championships by
accumulating enough points during the 2000 JCCA season. Because the World
Championship event is being held before this year's JCCA Nationals, the JCCA
used the 2000 season results to determine the participants in the Continental
Championship event. KK said of the competition, "I had a blast. Everybody
was so supportive of each other. The whole atmosphere was very positive and
encouraging." She also said, "The routes we had to climb were awesome! The
were set beautifully." KK usually trains at the Boston Rock Gym but will
be spending more time in the elevator shaft at Vertical Dreams in Manchester
to train for the 100 foot walls in Austria. For any climbing gear companies
looking to sponsor some young talent, KK is hoping to score some financial
support for the upcoming season so she can attend the team training camp
in Colorado, the Worlds in Austria, and the Nationals in Michigan.

2/3/01 Pawtuckaway, NH
Luke Parady sent Chunk O' Blitz, V12,
today at Pawtuckaway, NH. Luke said that most of the boulders were covered
in snow, except Chunk O' Blitz, allowing him to get the third
ascent. |
2/3/01 Rattlesnake Mountain, CT
Dave Theriault, "dying to get on real stone,"
hiked up to Rattlesnake Mountain in Farmington, CT yesterday and sent two
of his projects from last year. Requiem For A Samurai, V10, starts
on the jug in the middle of Drunken Master and climbs out the steep
bulge to the left of the 5.8 crack via small holds and a big bump to a good
edge. Crouching Spider, V10, is on a steep boulder just down and to
the right of the Will Warren's cave entrance. Starting on two powerful crimps,
pull your butt off the ground and fire for a sloper a few feet out, and again
for a horn at the lip, then pull onto the slab. Short, but very powerful.
Just getting your butt off the ground and releasing your right hand to throw
is the crux. |
