Bouldering in Delaware

Rockford Park

Jeff Holt, a regional coordinator for The Access Fund, has both developed and negotiated access to a fine bouldering area in Rockford Park at the high point of Wilmington, Delaware. With many established problems ranging from V0 to V5, this area provides some outdoor diversion for the deprived climbers living in southern New Jersey and Delaware. The boulders are on the hill side below the water tower. In June of 2000, Falcon Publishing is releasing a new book, Rock Climbing New Jersey, by Paul Nick and Neil Sloane that will also cover Rockford Park in detail. Brian Dellett e-mailed us and said the bouldering here was not worth trip, however, if you are a local it may provide a fix. If you have any additional information regarding bouldering in Delaware, please e-mail us.

Alopocas Woods Park

Fred Bohm has begun developing a bouldering area at Alopocas Woods Park, only five minutes from Rockford Park. According to Fred, to got to the boulders go to the main entrance of the park (near the smokestacks), cross the pedestrian bridge into the park itself. At the end of the bridge, go past the old abandoned building frame with the picnic tables in it and take a left. Follow a faint trail that takes you to the boulders. Currently, there are only a handful of established problems but there is potential for more. A local recently wrote us, saying "A group of about 10 climbers have recently been working on new problems here. There are now about 20 or so problems throughout the park. Most of the rock is very dirty so winter climbing is best but the problems are slowly coming around. The park rangers have been fairly cooperative with the rule being no roped climbing just bouldering. Delaware is apparently trying to establish sport climbing here with permits being necessary. As a matter of fact, one of the current problems is a real high-ball bolted climb, four bolts but who needs them with a good spot. The problems range from V0 to about V8. The climbs are much better than those in Rockford Park with many very obvious lines. There is alot more to be found at Alapocas. There are probably twenty more boulders worth climbing that have never seen chalk."
